Top 5: Most Disturbing Anime

By  |

In this list, we will discuss some of the most disturbing and unusual anime to date. Warning these anime involve a lot of gore, violence, nudity and/or sexual situations.

  1. Pupa

Dubbed as one of the most disturbing anime of the century, Pupa is a story about two siblings who are affected by parasitic butterflies- the older brother gains abilities for regeneration, while the little sister gains a craving for human flesh.

The story continues to fascinate those watching, with commenters stating that the most disturbing aspect is the fact that they keep receiving a continuous shot of a little girl’s descent into cannibalism.

  1. Elfen Lied

Released in 2004, Elfen Lied is about a young girl who has been subjected to human experimentation from the government. After she escapes, she is taken in by a pair who get involved in various conspiracies involving the girl.

It is known throughout the anime industry for the amount of violence, gore and nudity it had compared to most anime of the time. However, the plot is deep and the story sucks you in right from the beginning.

  1. Boku no Pico

This is another anime that has infamously been known around the internet mostly due to the shock value for those watching. It provides an insight into the life of a character trying to understand his sexuality.

It’s a short story about a character falling in love with his casual sex partner.

  1. Another

This anime promised violence and horror akin to a Stephen King book or movie adaptation. It did not disappoint. The story is about a boy who transfers to a new city, where his new classroom consists of students who mistrust each other.

They are all pointedly ignoring the existence of one girl. When he befriends the girl, people start dying around the community. They find out the secrets that involve the ghost trying to kill all the students, and the people who survived.

  1. Mirai Nikki

While it is engrossing and plot-heavy, it can also be heavily disturbing at the same time. Yuki is a high school boy who is suddenly thrust in the middle of a game that decides who will become the new god of time and space.

The art and animation is decent, and the concept of a “Future Diary” is very original for this kind of genre. Also, the disturbing aspects are due to gore, violence and the stalker-ish tendencies of his one ally, Yuno Gasai, who single-handedly defeats everyone while protecting him at the same time.
