A Brief Look At: Pokémon Centers in Japan

By  |

Besides Mario, it is arguable that Pokemon is Japan’s biggest culturally iconic feature. We are all familiar with Pikachu and Ash and the rest of the gang. Heck, many of us spent our times in the school yard trading their cards, competing with others, and watching the anime. We all remember crying during that one moment in the first movie and many of us have played the games.

Even people who aren’t really into Pokemon got into Pokemon Go! this past summer. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that there is place in Tokyo called the Pokemon Center Tokyo.

First released as a game in 1996, then it went through various forms of media like being adapted into an anime, Pokemon has become well-known throughout the world. The name of the series “Pokémon“ is short for the original Japanese title “Pocket Monsters”.

So first off, what is the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo? Well the website says:

“The Pokémon Center is a specialist store for Pokémon goods, and can be found in 11 locations – Sapporo, Tohoku(Sendai), Tokyo, SKYTREE TOWN(Oshiage),Tokyo-Bay(Chiba), Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka,Hiroshima and Fukuoka. The wide range of original Pokémon Center goods are the most popular items found at the Pokémon Center. If you want Pokémon goods, you know the Pokémon Center is the place to go!”

These stores are basically the place to go for all your Pokemon merchandise needs! And many visitors have mentioned also that the merch that they have is seasonal, so if you want a specific type of item, you should research when they have it, and plan your trip accordingly.

A retail store filled to the brim with Pokemon cookies, games, clothing, mugs, stationery, soft toys and accessories? Yes please! The staff has to continuously restock the shelves with items that are quickly being sold out.

If you’re not able to go, don’t fret! There are other, smaller locations that you can go to! The website discusses their other Pokemon Stores.

“The Pokémon Store is a “casual Pokémon shop.” It is a small-scale shop that offers a lineup of our most popular products, chosen from the wide selection of items available at the Pokémon Center. You can enjoy casual shopping inside the Pokémon world at convenient-to-reach locations. The store also carries exclusive original goods not sold anywhere else.”
