Weekly Manga Update – New Releases

By  |

The grass is getting greener. The skies are getting rainier, the air is warming up, and the time for new manga is here! May has started and that means we’ve got some new manga to look forward to! In particular, there’s a slew of new volume 1’s that deserve your attention. So how about saying hello to spring with these new titles?!

1. My Brother’s Husband, Volume 1

First up is a slice of life manga that shows that times are changing in Japan and the idea of family is constantly changing. In this heartbreaking but still hopeful comic, we are introduced to a modern day unconventional family.

My Brother’s Husband Volume 1 Description:

“Yaichi is a work-at-home suburban dad in contemporary Tokyo; formerly married to Natsuki, father to their young daughter, Kana. Their lives suddenly change with the arrival at their doorstep of a hulking, affable Canadian named Mike Flanagan, who declares himself the widower of Yaichi’s estranged gay twin, Ryoji. Mike is on a quest to explore Ryoji’s past, and the family reluctantly but dutifully takes him in. What follows is an unprecedented and heartbreaking look at the state of a largely still-closeted Japanese gay culture: how it’s been affected by the West, and how the next generation can change the preconceptions about it and prejudices against it.”

2. Girls’ Last Tour, Vol. 1

Perhaps you’re more into something more post-apocalyptic? This manga comes with a darker premise and promises to keep you intrigued!

Girls’ Last Tour Volume 1 Description:

“Civilization is dead, but not Chito and Yuuri. Time to hop aboard their beloved Kettenkrad motorbike and wander what’s left of the world! Sharing a can of soup or scouting for spare parts might not be the experience they were hoping for, but all in all, life isn’t too bad…”

3. Delicious in Dungeon, Vol. 1

Foods and dungeons don’t really go together in manga, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t if the right challenger comes to change that, and it seems like “Delicious in Dungeon” is proving that they indeed can. Arguably one of the most original on this week’s list, this is one foodie manga that shouldn’t be missed!

Delicious in Dungeon Volume 1 Description:

“When young adventurer Laios and his company are attacked and soundly thrashed by a dragon deep in a dungeon, the party loses all its money and provisions…and a member! They’re eager to go back and save her, but there is just one problem: If they set out with no food or coin to speak of, they’re sure to starve on the way! But Laios comes up with a brilliant idea: “Let’s eat the monsters!” Slimes, basilisks, and even dragons…none are safe from the appetites of these dungeon-crawling gourmands!”

4. The Case Study of Vanitas, Vol. 2

Do you want a nice slice of steampunk super natural fantasy? How about if it has vampires and “vampire doctors?” Sound intriguing, well the second volume of the new manga The Case Study of Vanita comes out this month as well and it promises to take the story that was presented in the first volume to the next level!

The Case Study of Vanitas Volume 2 Description:

“Now installed at a hotel in Paris with the help of Count Orlok, Noé and Vanitas take their awkward partnership on the road…to a vampire masquerade ball! The order of the evening may be small talk and hobnobbing with fellow guests, but the mystery of the curse-bearers is never far behind. Intrigue swirls as quickly as the dancers twirl, a blue moon ascends over the guests…and all hell breaks loose!”

5. The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku

Straight off the hype train of yet another well received dance oriented video game, we have the popular digital songstress making a jump into the light novel genre.

The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku Description:

“The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku is a new light novel based on Hatsune Miku—the singing, dancing, and gaming sensation that’s taken the world by storm! This self-contained, original novel was inspired by the Hatsune Miku song series of the same name, a collection of tracks so popular that they forced down the servers that hosted them, earning the name “The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku.” Soon after, Hatsune Miku grew into a huge multimedia phenomenon, with millions of fans worldwide.

Asano is a young university student tasked with testing out the technology department’s newest creation—the life-like android, Hatsune Miku. Although Hatsune Miku has a lot to learn, Asano comes to see her as more than merely a piece of tech and together the two learn what life and love is all about.”
