The New Year is here and the anime news continues to come! So without further ado here is this first year’s Anime Minute ready to catch you up for the week!
While not all fans are into anime and video game dubs, there are fans that still love them. And it’s with this in mind that we bring you news from Funimation that details the dub cast for both “Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid” and “Aria the Scarlett Ammo AA!” This is what went down at the Industry Panel of Ikkicon where they announced the video release plans for both and they’re due out in April 2017.
Meet the English dub cast!
If you are not familiar with each anime, check out the synopsis for each below!
After adorable “mermaid” Mamori is transferred to one of five artificial islands, she’s cornered, attacked and eventually saved by another beautiful transfer named Mirei. Unfortunately, even after the girl intervenes, Mamori’s attackers refuse to let up. Just when they think all hope is lost, Mirei and Mamori share a passionate kiss that turns the little “mermaid” into a powerful sword in this new show from series composer Yousuke Kuroda (High School of the Dead, Mobile Suit Gundam 00) and ARMS studio (Ikki Tousen, Queen’s Blade, Elfen Leid) – Funimation
In this spinoff of the original Aria the Scarlet Ammo series, Aria Kanzaki, the flat chested dual-wielding Butei is back! And this time, she’s got a new partner. Akari Mamiya is a first year in the assault department and a low ranked Butei. She dreams of being as powerful as Aria, but her skills simply aren’t up to par yet. She gets a chance to be trained by her idol when she and Aria are matched as mentee and mentor, but it turns out there’s more to teaching than skill! – Funimation
While new anime favorites cropped up in 2016, Naruto kept on going strong. It did so with the help of the anime which finally got to the climactic end of the Sasuke rivalry and also the manga’s original run. Recently we saw that the series animator’s Airi Taguchi and Seki Ko paid homage to the event with these awesome posts! So happy belated New Years Naruto fans!
Seki Ko uploaded this sketch of Naruto and Sasuke with their backs turned while Boruto stands facing us holding a sword.

Ever thought of taking a Japanese culture course in college? Wondered how fun it would be to discuss the things in anime and manga that you love on an entirely new level? Well the University of South Carolina is offering a class called “Reading and Writing About Magical Girl.” It’s an English 101 course and it explores the tropes of the magical girl genre through the lens of feminism and political commentary!
Apparently people have loved the class and the professor herself has even made a Reddit post about it! One of our own writers had a hoot studying a more broad Japanese culture class in their undergrad! It’s nice to see universities embracing anime and mange.
Check out the Reddit to get a more depth look at what the course talked about.
