Kpop Fix: Rookie by Red Velvet
Kpop girl group Red Velvet is making waves! They have been receiving a lot of love from all around the world for their further mini album and it’s single “Rookie.” They’ve been one of the most successful girl groups and have continued with their release of hit after hit. The MV for the song alone hit a million views within half a day! The mini album itself has six new tracks on it which includes the all too addicting “Rookie” and even a solo ballad by Wendy called “Last Love.”
“Rookie” was released on February 1st at midnight KST on iTunes. That night it skyrocketed around the world within eight countries including Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Argentina, Malaysia, and Malta. Additionally, the album reached the Top 10 on the overall iTunes charts in 20 countries and also topped the pop genre album charts in 14 countries that include Greece, Turkey, Belize, Finland, and Argentina. The girls are totally slaying and they will continue to slay us all. One country at a time.
“Rookie” had a pop funk vibe about it. It is a song that draws on their unconventional kpop sound with a combo of synth beats and singing-speak (speaking words as opposed to just singing them straight up). This playful feel then blasts into a saccharine chorus hook and boy do you get hooked! The melody lays down those brass horns and plucking synths and mix in with clap beats that’ll have you aching for the dancefloor.
Give the trippy music video a watch below! It’s got a fun Alice in Wonderland feel to it and mixes up cutesy with strange in an eye-catching way!
